Jochen Scherr was born into a family of German craftsmen, having his own woodworking shop at an early age in his family's home. He apprenticed in precision mechanics in which he received his degree from Düsseldorf University in 1981. Settling in Southern California, he founded Crestford Wood Studio which specialized in restoration of Craftsman homes in the Pasadena area. In 2005 Jochen partnered with Cindy Vargas and together they operate Three Elements Studios.
At the age of 8 Jochen saw a performance of Mozart's The Magic Flute which began his lifelong love of opera and classical music. He has had extensive studies in music history and composition and can name nearly every classical recording, down to the orchestra and conductor. These experiences inform his ideas for the music stands and provide for hours of entertaining monologues in the wood shop.
